No Adoption Fees for Adult Cats

RCHS will not charge an adoption fee for cats one year old or older.  We are launching our "fee-waiver" program because we want to give these adult cats every chance to find the great homes they deserve.  If you wish to adopt 2 cats aged 1 year old or older the fee for the second cat will be $70.  All other adoption policies and guidelines apply.  Please contact the shelter at 483.6700 with any questions.

Hear about RCHS on the Radio!

Every Wednesday you can learn about RCHS, hear about adoptable animals, find out about upcoming events and more!  Listen for Gretchen, Jessica or Beth on WSYB 1380 AM on Wednesdays at approximately 8:10 AM and on Cat Country 105.3 at approximately 8:30.  Do you have ideas for topics?  Please e-mail Gretchen with your suggestions.

 ScienceDiet.com

To help the animals in our care minimize stress-related digestive problems, we have partnered with Hill's Science Diet to feed our dogs and cats only Science Diet dry food. This will ensure a high-quality, consistent diet while they are at RCHS and we recommend it to our adopters. The program provides the food for free which is another benefit!

Help Raise Money for RCHS at Rutland's Hannaford!

The Hannaford store in Rutland is focusing on RCHS during the month of August!  They will host a cutest pet contest and customers can donate and purchase gently used books.  Their associates will also do events to raise money for RCHS.  If you have gently used books for the book sale please drop them off at the Hannaford in Rutland.  While you're there you can vote for the cutest pet!  Last year they raised $2,500 for RCHS and they hope to beat that for this year!  Thanks Hannaford!

Our thanks to everyone who braved the weather on Sunday and helped raise money for RCHS! We had 40 walkers (and many of their canine friends!) dodge rain drops during their walk.  Our thanks to the sponsors, vendors and volunteers.  A special thanks to Danica for organizing the event for us!

RCHS Partners with VT-CAN to get Rutland County Cats Spayed & Neutered!

Vermont Companion Animal Neutering (VT-CAN), a low cost spay/neuter clinic located in Middlesex, VT, is a long drive from Rutland County.  To help out, RCHS and VT-CAN are working together to make it easier for you.  By dropping your cat at RCHS, volunteers will transport your cat to VT-CAN where he or she will be spayed or neutered and given a rabies shot and returned to RCHS later that day.  Wednesday, October 6 is the available date.  To learn more click here.  To register call the shelter at 483.6700.

Hot Weather Tips to Keep your Pets Safe!

Pets need special care in the hot, summer months.  When the temperature rises dogs and cats should be inside, with air conditioning or fans, or in the shade if they're outside.  All animals need access to lots of clean, cold water to help them stay hydrated.  Be careful not to over exercise them especially when it's very hot.  Walks in the early morning and later in the evening with short walks during the day are best.  Do not leave your animals alone in a parked car!  Even with the windows open on a hot day it can become very hot very quickly which could lead to fatal heat stroke.  Dogs will enjoy a dip in a pool, pond, lake or even a small plastic pool and it will help them cool off and feel more comfortable.  Not all dogs are strong swimmers so keep an eye on them and make sure they don't stay in too long.  Special care should be taken for overweight, elderly or sick animals in the hot weather, too.  For more tips please call the shelter at 483.6700.

"Buy A Brick" Campaign!

RCHS, celebrating 50 years, has kicked off its "Buy-a-Brick Campaign" to help raise funds and build a walkway.  Buy a brick, have it engraved, and dedicate your purchase in honor/memory of a special pet or person, commemorate a special event in someone's life.

Click here to get an order form or click here to order online.  For more information e-mail Beth Shapcott or call her at 483.9171.

Barn Cats Available

If you are looking for a couple of barn cats to keep down your rodent population, please ask us!  We occasionally have cats who are too timid or unsocialized to place in a home environment and we are happy to place them in loving barns - they will be fixed and rabies vaccinated and there is no charge to adopt!  Please call the shelter for more information.
