Losing a pet is stressful — we want to make the process of finding them as simple as possible. Tails of Hope is staffed seven days a week, so even when our Adoption Center is closed on Sundays or Mondays, you can still reach us and reclaim your pet.
If you believe your animal may be at our shelter, call us right away at 802.483.6700. Leave a message if we don’t answer and a staff member will get back to you promptly.
The most successful reunions happen quickly — and they almost always involve a pet wearing a collar with current ID tags. A pet with up-to-date contact information is usually home within hours. We also strongly encourage microchipping as a permanent backup, especially if tags are ever lost or removed.

I think my lost pet is at Tails of Hope — what do I do?
How long will you hold a stray animal?
All stray animals are held for a minimum of five business days to give owners the opportunity to reclaim them. After five business days, the animal will begin the process of being evaluated for the best possible placement.
What does it cost to reclaim my pet?
There is a $25 impoundment fee plus a $14 per day boarding fee for all reclaimed animals. We accept credit card or cash. Please be prepared to show proof of ownership — such as current veterinary records or town registration — when you come to pick up your pet.
I found a stray animal. Can I bring it to Tails of Hope?
Yes. We accept stray domestic animals brought in by the public as well as by Animal Control Officers. We ask that you call ahead at 802.483.6700 to give us notice you’re coming — but no stray will ever be turned away. When you arrive, please enter through the door marked Animal Intake.
What happens to a stray after five days?
If an owner does not come forward within five business days, the animal will be evaluated for the best possible placement. We make every effort to find loving, lifelong homes for every animal in our care.
