Volunteering at RCHS!

If you're interested in volunteering at the Rutland County Humane Society, we would love to have you join us!

We currently have more than 220 volunteers who are so valuable to us.  But we can always use more help!  As we like to say, we couldn't do it without our volunteers!

In order to volunteer at RCHS you must be 18 years old or older.  This is due to our insurance coverage.  If you are younger than 18 and would like to help the animals at RCHS, here are some ideas:

*      Collect items for the animals.  Click here to see our wish list.

*      Make items for the animals (dog biscuits for the dogs and catnip toys for the cats are favorites!).

*      Collect money to help pay for the animals and the programs at RCHS.

We have two types of volunteer opportunities at RCHS.  The first is for people who are interested in volunteering for personal fulfillment or professional development.  The second is for people who need to do court mandated or school required community service.

Getting Started

The first step in becoming a volunteer at RCHS is to fill out an application.  Request an application by e-mailing Beth Shapcott or calling her at 483.9171 and she will mail an application to you.  Please provide your mailing address.

If you are applying for Community Service volunteering (court mandated or for school) click here for an application.  When it's completed please mail it to Jessica Danyow at RCHS, 765 Stevens Road, Pittsford, VT 05763.

If you are interested in walking dogs or socializing cats a mandatory training session is required.  Dog walkers are asked to commit to a two hour shift once a week, we are currently filling morning shifts.  Cat socializers are requested to commit at least one hour per week during normal shelter hours, 12-5 Wednesday - Sunday.

Non-Community Service volunteer opportunities include dog walking, cat socializing, fostering animals, transporting pets to a veterinarian appointment, special events, help with mailings and distributing posters.  These opportunities are described in more depth on the Volunteer Application.

We hope you will join us as a volunteer at RCHS.  Many of our volunteers have told us how rewarding the experience is and all of our animals tell us how much they appreciate the volunteers!

If you have any questions about volunteering, please contact Beth Shapcott at 802.483.9171 or e-mail her.
